Former Chancellor Aubrey Bishop dies

Former Chancellor of the Judiciary, Aubrey Bishop died Wednesday evening at the Georgetown Public Hospital. He was 81.
Guyana Times International was told that Justice Bishop had endured a prolonged period of illness and had been receiving treatment at a private hospital. Aubrey Fitz Ronald Bishop was born at Georgetown, Guyana and educated at the secondary level at Queen’s College. He was called to the English Bar in July 1963. He enjoyed great success in the worlds of civil and criminal law in Guyana. He was elevated to the High Court in 1976, to the Court of Appeal in 1987, became chief justice in 1992; and chancellor and head of the judiciary in 1996.
Immediately upon demitting office, Bishop assumed a full-time professorship of law at the University of Guyana.  Professor Bishop, who also holds a Bachelor’s of Science in Industrial Relations and Management, as well as a LLM degree, and has been lecturing for 27 years. He was vice president of the Methodist Church in the Caribbean and the Americas, and a FIFA international soccer referee. He has also represented Guyana at cricket and football. Professor Bishop was twice honoured nationally with the Cacique’s Crown of Honour, and the Order of Roraima, Guyana’s third and second highest awards, respectively. He was married to Dr Carole Maison-Bishop, a union that bore three children.
